Psychology
IB Psychology explores how human behaviour is shaped by biological processes, cognitive thinking, and social influences. The subject investigates why people think, feel, and behave in certain ways by examining psychological theories, research studies, and real-world applications.
Students develop critical thinking skills by analysing famous psychological experiments and evaluating different explanations for human behaviour. The course combines scientific research with essay-based analysis, making it particularly suitable for students interested in psychology, neuroscience, sociology, medicine, and behavioural sciences.
IB Psychology encourages students to question assumptions about human behaviour while developing strong analytical and research skills.
IB Psychology Syllabus Overview
The IB Psychology curriculum is divided into core approaches and optional topics.
Core Approaches to Understanding Behaviour
Students examine three major perspectives used by psychologists to explain human behaviour:
Biological Approach
Explores how brain structures, hormones, and genetics influence behaviour.
Cognitive Approach
Studies how mental processes such as memory, perception, and decision-making shape behaviour.
Sociocultural Approach
Examines how culture, social norms, and relationships influence human behaviour.
Research Methods
Students learn how psychologists conduct experiments and analyse behavioural data.
Options (HL/SL)
Students study one or more specialised areas of psychology, such as:
- Abnormal Psychology
- Developmental Psychology
- Health Psychology
- Psychology of Human Relationships
These topics apply psychological theories to real-life issues and case studies.
IB Psychology Exam Structure
IB Psychology assessment consists of three exam papers and an Internal Assessment.
Paper 1
Students answer short-answer questions (SAQ) and extended response questions (ERQ) based on the three core approaches:
- Biological
- Cognitive
- Sociocultural
- HL: 120 minutes — 40%
- SL: 120 minutes — 50%
Paper 2
Students write extended essays based on one of the optional psychology topics.
- HL: 120 minutes — 20%
- SL: 60 minutes — 25%
Paper 3 (HL only)
Students analyse a case study on research methodology and answer questions about experimental design and research methods.
- HL: 60 minutes — 20%
Internal Assessment (IA)
Students conduct a psychology experiment based on a known psychological study and produce a research report.
The IA involves:
- designing a group experiment
- collecting and analysing data
- evaluating the research process
- HL: 20%
- SL: 25%
Why Students Find IB Psychology Difficult
Many students initially believe IB Psychology is a memorisation-heavy subject. However, high marks require much more than simply remembering studies.
1. Large Number of Psychological Studies
Students must remember many classic psychology studies and explain how they support psychological theories.
This requires understanding:
- research methods
- experiment results
- strengths and limitations of each study
2. Essay-Based Evaluation
Psychology exams require students to write structured analytical essays.
Students must:
- explain theories
- reference research studies
- evaluate strengths and limitations
Even strong writers often struggle because IB Psychology essays follow a very specific structure different from typical school essays.
3. Applying Studies to Questions
Many students memorise studies but struggle to apply them effectively in exam answers.
High-scoring responses must clearly connect research findings to the psychological theory being discussed.
How IBtheTOP Helps Students Achieve a 7
At IBtheTOP, our Psychology programme focuses on helping students master both psychological knowledge and exam-writing techniques.
Structured Essay Frameworks
Students learn how to organise essays using clear IB structures that maximise marks in both SAQ and ERQ questions.
Study Integration Techniques
Rather than memorising studies individually, we teach students how to link studies directly to psychological theories.
This makes it easier to recall studies and apply them effectively in exams.
Research Method Training
Students develop a strong understanding of research methods, which is essential for both Paper 3 and the Internal Assessment.
Exam Practice with Real Questions
Through extensive practice with IB past papers, students gain confidence in writing clear, analytical responses under timed exam conditions.
This structured training helps students transform psychological knowledge into high-scoring exam answers.
